Oscar Night – The 81st Academy Awards

And the Oscar goes to…

…Hugh Jackman

His performance at the Academy Awards is worthy of an Oscar! He dances, sings, simply performs as if there is nothing on earth he would rather do! What a great host.

The whole show was new and exciting. There have been some great improvements. It feels quicker and there is a theme to it, showing the audience how a film is being made from make-up to editing to sound mixing etc.

As for the actual Awards: I am quite pleased with a lot of them. Penélope Cruz really deserved the Supporting Actress Award for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, WALL – E was my favourite for Best Animation and Sean Penn did a swell job on Milk, but what’s up with giving an Oscar to Heath Ledger? I love him, his acting and especially his Joker, but couldn’t they have given him an Honorary Award or something like that? It is so unfair to the actors who are still alive. Obviously they had no chance!

But now the best thing about the 81st Academy Awards: Kate Winslet finally got the Oscar she should’ve gotten five times before! And she gave such a beautiful speech.

as for Heath Ledger: I am tempted to say “to the contrary” – I am with Mark Kermode on the page that giving this Award to Ledger now that he’s dead is slightly unfair to him, Ledger. People tend to be blinded by the big emotion about his death and his legacy, but overlook that this performance (and “Doctor Parnassus” as well, they say…) by any means and stadards is just fabulous. The only thing fabulous in the Dark Knight, actually, and the one element that elevates Dark Knight beyond its peer superher movies. He performed more over-the-top, but stunningly natural in depicting this comic character – definitely more pissed-off Marlon Brando than anything I have seen in years. At least for this year I can clearly say that I have not seen any acting performance reaching this level. P.S. Hoffman is magnificent in “Doubt”, but firstly that was a bit of a cheat, as it was not really a supporting role, secondly it was limited by the limits of the film. The other nominees played a different league, and not a higher one. Chapeu to Ms Cruz, this one faint light in a bottomless pit of a movie ;-)

ThoHa – I absolutely agree that Heath’s performance was excellent! I just feel that there might have been a better way to show appreciation for it. He absolutely deserves an Oscar for the role but I think it would have been better to give him an honorary Oscar rather then have him compete with the other actors…

Kate Winslet hat ihn verdient. Und dann noch für einen Film, in dem sie eine Nazi-Frau spielt. Und der sehr umstritten ist. Politischer geht es nimmer.
