Star Trek
I have to admit that I have never actually seen any Star Trek film or TV show or anything to do with Star Trek. I was, however, talked into watching the movie that just came out at the cinemas and I absolutely loved it!
It is what it promises to be – action loaded. But it is also immensely funny. I really like that the cast is fairly unknown (I think the Spock-dude is from Heros, I know Simon Pegg from British comedies and obviously I know Winona Ryder. In the credits I saw that the bad guy, Nero, was played by Eric Bana, who I did not recognize at all. I didn’t know anyone else.). I don’t think I will get into the story…it is not really important what the film is about (like with many action films), but I will say that it is about time-travel and it is handled in a very clever way. Somehow, every one seems to know everything about time travel these days. For example, you are not allowed to meet yourself if you do travel through time and you cannot change the course of time or your fate in life (because there is a sort of loop). Obviously this is all nonsense because we only know it from films and the scripts were written by people who have never actually travelled through time (because nobody has…that we know of anyway). I always like time traveling in films though, mainly because I would love to do it. I am so addicted to traveling to different countries so that traveling to different countries in different times sounds like the most fun ever to me!
Alright, back to Star Trek. I don’t really have anything further to say about it. If you like action films (which I usually don’t) then I think you should watch it! The film is better than the trailer.
What occurred to me while watching this film is that a lot of Star Trek has come to be general knowledge. Who doesn’t know the saying “Beam me up, Scotty” for example? And everyone knows Spock’s ears. There is no real ignoring this Star Trek phenomenon. But I guess this is the same with Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, The Da Vinci Code and other mainstream blockbuster films (or books).

I’m uncomfortable labeling this Star Trek as an action film. I am fully aware, having seen it myself, that it is more action packed than the previous films in the series. It’s certainly more visually stimulating with excitement to be found fairly frequently. However, Star Trek has always been a fairly philosophical franchise, and this film is no exception to that. And so, I would feel more comfortable putting it with whatever category The Matrix films falls under. If that’s still action, then obviously the genre is too broad.
In this case, it seemed the movie was tackling time travel theory, which was quite interesting since it contrasts pretty sharply with J.J. Abrams time travel theory on Lost (Whatever Happened, Happened). In addition to dealing with the consequences of traveling in time, I thought the movie had an interesting take on destiny. Even in this alternate time-line, it seems everybody eventually finds themselves in the places they would have been anyway. Kirk’s destiny is to captain the Enterprise with future friend Spock as his first mate. The circumstances change but the destination (’destiny’-ation) remains the same.
I don’t consider myself a Star Trek fan really, but I did think this movie was pretty spectacular. I’m happy to see you liked it as well.

As I said, I have never actually seen any other Star Trek…so for me, it was an action film. But I did like the philosophical aspects of it. It certainly wasnt just action…maybe there should be a sub genre, because I would have called The Matrix an action film as well…philoaction? Haha..I dont know.

A B-? That sounds quite bad…I think I would have given it a B+ or at least a B…
